Facebook and the Koobface Worm

Over 175 million people use Facebook and many are falling foul of the Koobface Worm. Hoax applications have been made available by hackers that trick the user to reveal their username and password.

If the worm becomes installed on a user’s computer, Facebook cookies are searched to reveal the user’s friends.  These friends then receive a link to a video entitled something like “funny video” or “this is a video of you”. Clicking on the link directs the user to download a codec file to enable watching the video … a Trojan infection has now got another victim and so it goes on.

Once the computer has been infected it can be taken over by the hackers via a backdoor.

Other social networking sites such as Bebo and Myspace can be affected as well.

Provided you have good, up-to-date security software installed on you computer you should be safe but as a general rule, be very careful of any social networking applications you download and install, video links and in particular downloads that state that they are codecs necessary for watching videos.
