Computer won’t start
Possible causes
- virus or spyware infection
- operating system files missing or corrupt
Remedies
- try booting into Safe Mode (tap F8 when you power on). If this lets you in, try scanning the hard drive with scandisk, scan for viruses and spyware and delete temporary files.
- transfer the hard drive to another computer and scan for viruses, spyware and hard drive indexing errors.
- backup data and reinstall system.
Computer starts but is very slow
Possible causes
- too many programs running in the background.
- viruses and / or spyware.
- you are running too many applications at the same time.
- insufficient RAM for the applications you are trying to run i.e. a software/hardware problem.
Remedies
- use the system configurator to stop unnecessary background programs.
- remove infections.
- close some applications down. Add more RAM (see Upgrades page). Adjust the Virtual Memory setting.
Applications freeze or crash
Possible causes
- application software corrupt.
- insufficient RAM or virtual memory for application.
Remedy
- uninstall application, defragment the hard drive and then reinstall.
- add more RAM and / or adjust the virtual memory.
