Wireless networking

Wireless networking can be great, freeing you to access the web wherever you want.  But many people find that they get poor signal strength and that their connect often drops out.

Also, there is the problem of wireless security.  How do you make your signal safe from hackers?

If you have any questions about your wireless connection, please get in touch.

Connection problems

There are many ways that you may be able to improve your wireless connection:

  1. If you neighbours also use WiFi you may be getting interferance from their signal.  We can try to tune your router so that it transmits a slightly different frequency from your neighbours rather like tuning a radio to a different station.
  2. If you can, try moving your router to a different location in the house to avoid anything too solid like dense brick walls, walls that contain metal supports and heavy household items like microwaves, washing machines, TVs etc.

Also, try wandering around the house with your laptop to find where the signal is better.

Wireless security

It is very important that you have your wireless signal secure.  If you don’t, you may get neighbours or even someone sitting in their car connecting to the web via your broadband.  This would mean that they are using some of your bandwidth and slowing down your own internet speed.  They could use up your download limit and that may result in an extra bill from your ISP.  At the worst they could download material with a criminal content and you could get the blame.  It would also make it easier to hack into your computers and steal information about you.

Make sure that your router is transmitting a secure signal that other people cannot connect to without being given the security key.  There are a number of slightly different types of security but the most common are WEP or WPA.  WPA is the better one to use.
